Why Your Chronic Illness Won't Heal: The Nervous System Connection

I wrote something this month that I wish someone had told me years ago when I was still deep in the exhausting cycle of trying everything and watching nothing work, and I really want you to read it because I think it might change how you understand what's actually happening in your body.

When your nervous system is stuck in protection mode, signaling danger even when you're lying in bed desperately trying to rest, your cells literally cannot receive healing. It doesn't matter how perfect your protocol is or how disciplined you've been, your body is in a biological stalemate called the Cell Danger Response, and no supplement or treatment can override it until your system feels safe enough to let its guard down.

This is actually the missing piece that finally makes sense of why everything else hasn't worked yet.

💬 NOTE FROM DR. CAT

The longer I've been doing this work, the more my own practice has come down to being very consistent with the basics.

It's funny because for a while, the basics felt too easy. I felt like I needed to go deeper into parts work, trauma patterns, and more advanced processing. My mind wanted to keep learning, keep digging, because the initial practices seemed so simple that surely I needed more.

But here's what I've realized: all the knowledge in the world doesn't mean anything when it comes to actually being with your symptoms and discarding the stories that don't serve you. You could read all the books, become deeply knowledgeable about nervous system science, and still not be able to be with anything. I know this because this was me. I couldn't live that life very well, staying out of story and allowing discomfort to just exist.

It comes back to the basics every time. Creating the habit of attending to the sensations in my body. Noticing the thoughts I have looping that I'm not interrupting. Becoming discerning about whether I want to keep feeding the false beliefs and operating systems that were given to me, the ones that kept me safe but no longer serve me.

When you practice this consistently, something shifts. You start to notice in the moment, "wow, I'm trying to control this situation because I hate feeling this shame" and suddenly you have a choice. You have agency. But that only becomes obvious when your habit is actually attending to your own feelings, not just understanding them intellectually.

This is why I'm doing the 40-Day Daily Regulate right now, alongside the Primal Trust Community. Even as a leader, I'm a student of my own medicine. My brain still needs the practice of allowing the shame when someone gives me critical feedback, allowing the guilt, the anger, the latest perimenopause symptoms. Giving all of it permission to exist as it is.

Don't undercut yourself by thinking these practices are too simple. You are never beyond the basics. This is the lived experience of Primal Trust.

🧘 PRACTICE OF THE MONTH

Shimmer Breath + Vocal Vibration

This is one of my favorite practices to share because it's so simple (remember we are going back to the basics) and yet something shifts almost immediately when you do it, you can feel your whole system start to soften, and that's not your imagination, that's your vagus nerve actually receiving the message that it's okay to relax.

Here's how to do it:

Breathe in slowly through your nose for about 4 seconds, and as you do, imagine this warm golden light moving through your body, filling up all the places that feel tight or guarded.

Then let your exhale be long and slow, somewhere between 6 and 8 seconds, but instead of just breathing out, hum a soft "mmm" or "vooo" sound, whatever feels natural.

While you're humming, gently tap your chest or the sides of your neck with your fingertips.

Why this works: That combination of breath and sound and touch is speaking directly to your nervous system in the language it understands, telling it that right now, in this moment, you're safe.

Try it a few times and just notice what happens.
